THE Great Green Wall (GGW) has planted 3,000 seedlings in three local government areas of Konduga, Jere and Maiduguri Metropolitan Council to mitigate increase in environmental degradation.

It also donated Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Cylinders to vulnerable women groups, especially those who have returned back to their ancestral homes to promote clean cooking energy following displacement by Boko Haram Terrorists.

This was disclosed yesterday by the Director General of GGW Representative, Habiba Ibrahim while in Auno village of Konduga local government area as part of campaign and sensitization tour.

She said: “Our Organization is deeply concerning over the increasing and unnecessary felling of trees, which have compounded the situation of the climatic change of our environment, especially in Borno state.

“To this end, we have planted about 3,000 seedlings in schools and communities of Konduga, Jere and Maiduguri Metropolitan Council to mitigate increase in environmental degradation.

“Likewise, GGW has donated Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Cylinders to vulnerable women groups, especially those who have returned back to their ancestral homes to promote clean cooking energy following displacement by Boko Haram Terrorists.” She said.

Ibrahim however called on all and sundry to desist from felling down of trees, even as she commended Governor Babagana Zulum for his efforts in addressing environmental degradation and erosion related issues in the state.

In his welcome address, the Commissioner for Environment, Mohammed Kois, the present administration has planted about 10 million seedlings across the state, even as he said Government has since banned indiscrimate felling down of trees, as anyone found wanting will be dealt with according to the law.

In a vote of thanks, the District Head of Auno community, Alhaji Abba Anas Umar thanked GGW for the gesture, and pledged to take the campaign to the doorsteps of his subjects so that felling down of trees as a source of firewood or charcoal consumption would be discouraged. End
