GUINEA’S National Transitional Council (NTC) head, Dansa Kourouma, presented a preliminary draft of a new constitution to transitional President Mamady Doumbouya on Monday. This draft will undergo presidential review before being put to a national referendum.
The proposed constitution, crafted from over two years of public debate and consultation, outlines a five-year presidential term renewable only once. It also sets the mandates for the National Assembly and the Senate at five and six years, respectively.
Key elements of the draft emphasise the independence of the judiciary, the separation of powers among the executive, legislative, and judicial branches, and the respect for human rights.
‘Guinea is at a decisive turning point in its history,’ stated Kourouma. He underscored the need to promote the draft through public consultations to engage citizens and move towards its adoption via a referendum.
Additionally, the draft proposes the establishment of a National Development Commission and a National Committee for Education and Human Rights, aimed at enhancing the country’s developmental and educational frameworks.
This new constitution marks a significant step in Guinea’s transitional phase, with the goal of establishing a stable and democratic governance structure.
