Senegal’s Pastef Party Claim ‘Resounding Victory’ in Polls

SENEGAL’S ruling Pastef party has declared a ‘resounding victory’ in the country’s legislative elections held on Sunday. With 90-95 percent of the ballots counted, state-run Radio and Television Broadcasting (RTS) confirmed that Pastef, led by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, had secured a decisive win.

A turning point for Senegalese politics

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, addressing a crowd of supporters in Ziguinchor, said the victory was not just a win for his party, but for all Senegalese citizens who believe in justice and progress. ‘Together, we have showcased the true spirit of Senegalese democracy,’ Sonko declared, as jubilant crowds celebrated outside his residence.

Support from opposition leaders

Amadou Ba, leader of the opposition Jam Ak Njarin coalition and a former prime minister, extended his congratulations to Pastef. He described the outcome as a true reflection of the people’s will, adding that the election process demonstrated the maturity and civic responsibility of the Senegalese people. ‘This historic day for our democracy proves that our nation remains a model of citizen participation and peace,’ Ba remarked.

The victory holds particular significance for President Faye, who took office in March 2024. Faye’s administration now secures a mandate to pursue its ambitious reform agenda, with the aim of strengthening Senegal’s political and economic future. The election saw voters cast ballots for 165 deputies in the National Assembly, making this result a pivotal moment for the nation’s trajectory.

The elections mark a key moment in Senegal’s democratic development, solidifying Pastef’s position as a central force in the country’s political landscape.
