“GLOBAL peace is increasingly fragile, and Nigeria faces security challenges exacerbated by its proximity to regions of instability. As such, it is pragmatic and necessary for Nigeria to bolster its military capabilities, with a strong emphasis on naval warfare and maritime security.”
This is an excerpt from the speech delivered yesterday by the Leader, House of Representatives, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere while declaring open the Public Hearing on the Bill for An Act to Establish the Nigerian Marine Corps to Promote Maritime Security and For Related Matters, organized by the House Committee on Navy, which held at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja.
Prof. Julius Ihonvbere who represented the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas at the event referenced the United States Marine Corps, the Russian Naval Infantry, and the South Korean Marine Corps as prime examples of the proposed marine security which the Bill seeks to establish.
The House Leader further emphasized the essence of the Bill when he said: “This is not merely about creating another military branch but establishing a specialized and well-trained unit to address Nigeria’s unique maritime challenges and opportunities, thereby advancing the security, stability, and prosperity of the Nigerian country.”
