Harvard Expert Reveals OTC Remedy to Stop Fart Smells

FLATULENCE: it’s a problem we all face but often prefer not to discuss. Now, a leading gastroenterologist has revealed a simple solution using a popular over-the-counter remedy. Harvard Medical School’s Dr Trisha Pasricha has shared that the active ingredient in Pepto Bismol, bismuth subsalicylate, can reduce flatulence by up to 95 percent.

In a viral Instagram clip, Dr Pasricha explained how this common medication, designed for heartburn relief, works wonders for controlling gas. ‘Bismuth subsalicylate has been shown to reduce sulphide gases – the ones that cause that unpleasant smell,’ she said, offering a lifeline for those looking to avoid awkward social moments.

The simple solution for an embarrassing problem

The remedy is straightforward: take Pepto Bismol up to four times a day to ease social discomfort. Dr Pasricha suggests it as a quick fix, especially before events like flights. The cabin pressure during a flight can cause the expansion of gases in your gut, and this can lead to uncomfortable flatulence. Pepto Bismol helps mitigate that effect, she explains, noting the drastic increase in gas expansion as altitude rises.

However, while the remedy might sound like a miracle, Dr Pasricha cautioned against excessive use. ‘Studies show high doses of bismuth subsalicylate can be toxic, so moderation is key,’ she warned.

Why farts smell (and how to stop it)

Dr Pasricha also provided some fascinating insights into the biology of flatulence. Only about one percent of the gas released during a fart carries the foul odour. The remaining 99 percent is made up of odourless gases like nitrogen and carbon dioxide. The culprit behind the stench is sulphur-containing gas.

While occasional farting is completely normal, excessive or particularly foul-smelling gas can sometimes signal a deeper issue, such as inflammatory bowel disease or even colon cancer. Dr Pasricha suggests that passing gas 10 to 20 times a day is typical, but any significant change should prompt a visit to your GP.

Other ways to combat flatulence

Aside from the Pepto Bismol tip, the UK National Health Service (NHS) also recommends eating smaller meals, chewing food slowly, and drinking peppermint tea to reduce excessive gas, the MailOnline outlet reported. Regular exercise can also help manage digestive health.

While farts are an inevitable part of life, knowing how to handle them—whether with medicine or lifestyle adjustments—can help keep embarrassing moments at bay.
