2027: Pressure Mounts on Jonathan to Run Again – Bashir Ahmad Raises Alarm

Former presidential aide, Bashir Ahmad, has claimed that some political figures are quietly pressuring ex-President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Taking to his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, Bashir said the push is being spearheaded by politicians who believe Jonathan’s candidacy would be an easy sell in the North—particularly because he can only serve one term if elected.

“From all indications, there are ongoing subtle moves by certain political elements trying to convince former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest again in 2027,” he wrote.

According to him, the strategy is not necessarily built around any solid plans for development or national unity, but rather political convenience and power rotation.

“The troubling part is that this push is not rooted in what he would offer the North or the country at large, but merely in political convenience… The North deserves more than being used as a political ladder,” Bashir added.

Meanwhile, some political analysts have argued that among southern politicians, Jonathan remains the strongest potential challenger to President Bola Tinubu in the next election. His perceived acceptability in both northern and southern blocs could make him a formidable contender—if he agrees to run.

As of now, Jonathan himself has not reacted publicly to the claims.
