President Bola Tinubu has responded swiftly to the cries of retired police officers by ordering a significant upgrade in their pension benefits. This decision follows a recent protest by police retirees in Abuja who took to the streets to demand better welfare and a more dignified retirement.
The announcement came on Wednesday through Presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, who revealed that Tinubu directed the National Pension Commission (PenCom) to implement increases in pensions and introduce a minimum pension guarantee under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
The directive was issued after a briefing by PenCom’s Director General, Omolola Oloworaran. She updated the President on ongoing reforms, including efforts to protect pension assets amid economic challenges, and plans to allow Nigerians in the Diaspora to contribute in foreign currencies. Tinubu threw his weight behind the reforms, saying officers who serve and protect the nation must not be neglected in retirement.
Beyond just backing the proposals, the President made it clear that he expects immediate action. His firm stance signals a renewed commitment to the welfare of ordinary Nigerians—especially those who spent their lives in service to the country.
This move marks a crucial step in addressing long-standing grievances and rebuilding trust within the security sector.
