The Emir of Zuru in Kebbi State, Major General Muhammadu Sani Sami (Rtd.), also known as Gomo II, has passed away after a brief illness in a London hospital. He was 81 years old.
The late monarch, a retired military officer, is survived by four wives and seven children. Kebbi State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Garba Umar-Dutsinmari, confirmed the news on Sunday, describing it as a moment of deep sorrow for the state.
In a statement, the government extended heartfelt condolences to the Emir’s family, the Zuru Emirate Council, and the people of Zuru, praying that Almighty Allah forgives his shortcomings and grants him Jannatul Firdaus.
Born in 1943, Muhammadu Sani Sami rose through the ranks of the Nigerian Army to become a Major General before retiring to embrace traditional leadership. He ascended the throne in the mid-1990s and faithfully led the Zuru Emirate for nearly three decades.
Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah also expressed his condolences, describing the late Emir as a noble leader whose reign brought dignity and respect to his people. He added that the Emir’s loss is felt not only by Zuru but by the entire Kebbi State and Nigeria, highlighting his distinguished service both in the military and as a traditional ruler.
The passing of Gomo II marks the end of an era for Zuru, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, service, and commitment to his community.
