Patients at General Hospital Suleja in Niger State can now breathe a sigh of relief after the state’s Hospital Management Board announced a major cut in bed fees aimed at reducing healthcare costs.
In a circular dated August 11, 2025, and titled “Circular For Reduction Of Bed Fees”, the hospital authority said the new rates take effect immediately, warning staff to comply strictly or face disciplinary action.
Under the new directive, general ward fees have been pegged at ₦2,000 for a 10-day stay, replacing the old daily rate of ₦500. This means patients will now pay far less for extended admissions. Similarly, amenity ward charges were reduced from ₦2,000 per day to ₦1,000 per day.
“Henceforth, the new fees are ₦2,000 only for ten (10) days instead of the previous ₦500 per day, while the Amenity ward is ₦1,000 per day instead of the previous ₦2,000 per day for as long as the patient will be in the facility for 10 days,” the circular explained.
The management also issued a stern warning: “Anyone found collecting more than ₦2,000 or ₦1,000 as highlighted above will be dealt with administratively.”
The move is seen as part of efforts to cushion the economic pressure on families seeking medical care, while also ensuring affordability and accountability within public health institutions.
