MonITNG, a civic accountability organization, has sounded the alarm over the shocking condition of Jibi Primary School at Mopol Barracks in Bwari, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. The group described the school’s state as a heartbreaking example of government neglect despite substantial allocations to education.
In a statement on Wednesday, MonITNG said, “We visited Jibi Primary School, established in 2003 to provide quality education for children in the community. Sadly, the school is in an extremely dilapidated state, with structures that now pose danger to pupils and teachers alike.”
The organization highlighted that key facilities, including the administrative block and several classrooms, are leaking badly. Even the library — meant to be a hub of learning — suffers extensive water damage, leaving books and resources ruined whenever it rains.
“Basic infrastructure has collapsed. Three doors and eight windows have been removed, leaving classrooms exposed to the elements and increasing insecurity,” MonITNG said. “Walls are cracked, ceilings broken, and roofs damaged. Pupils are forced to learn in unsafe and deplorable conditions that no child should endure.”
The group criticized authorities for neglecting vital education infrastructure while diverting funds to projects that add little value to citizens’ lives. “How do we explain this level of decay in the Federal Capital Territory, despite huge funds allocated for education?” the statement asked.
MonITNG recalled that the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) had recently released over ₦250 billion for school upgrades nationwide. The group questioned whether these funds are being used transparently and urged immediate intervention.
Calling on FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Senator Ireti Kingibe to act, MonITNG emphasized, “Every child in the FCT deserves access to safe, decent, and conducive learning spaces. This is not just about Jibi Primary School — it’s about the future of our children and the government’s commitment to education as a right, not a privilege. The time to act is now.”
The deplorable state of Jibi Primary School adds to growing concerns over the condition of schools in rural areas of the FCT, highlighting the urgent need for accountability and effective governance in education.
