At least 29 people have sadly lost their lives in a boat accident that happened in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State. The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, around 11:30 am.
According to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), the ill-fated boat had about 90 passengers on board when it capsized. The accident was said to have been caused by overloading, which led the boat to collide with a tree stump in the water.
The passengers, including women and children, were travelling from Tugan Sule in Shagunu Ward to Dugga for a condolence visit when the disaster struck. Rescue teams swiftly responded, saving 50 lives, though two persons are still unaccounted for.
So far, NSEMA has confirmed that 29 bodies have been recovered. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing to find the remaining missing passengers.
