The Nigeria Police Force has emphasized the critical role of family in maintaining national security.
Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Mohammed Usaini Gumel made this assertion while representing the Inspector-General of Police at the opening ceremony of Exercise Haske Biyu 2025 at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji.
The exercise, themed “Family and National Security,” aims to strengthen inter-agency cooperation and collective response to Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
On behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, AIG Gumel reaffirmed the Nigerian Police Force’s commitment to working closely with the Armed Forces and other agencies in intelligence-sharing and joint operations.
AIG Gumel noted that strong family bonds are crucial for a thriving society, while weak family structures can lead to rising crime, radicalization, substance abuse, and violence.
He recallrd President Bola Tinubu’s emphasis on the importance of reinforcing the family unit to promote national security and stability while speaking on May 27, 2024, at the Children’s Day celebration where the President urged Nigerians to strengthen family bonds, citing the critical role families play in shaping the values and character of future generations.
Citing daily policing experiences, AIG Gumel highlighted the link between dysfunctional families and public security risks. He noted that many young people recruited into cult groups, banditry, and terrorism emerge from broken homes or environments lacking guidance and protection.
He pointed out that domestic violence, neglect, and child abuse are not just private tragedies but have long-term consequences for national security.
The Nigeria Police Force has embedded family-centered approaches into its policing strategy. Initiatives include Community Policing structures, Family Support and Gender Desks, and youth engagement programs. These efforts aim to prevent crime at its roots and support the government’s vision for a safer, more secure, and resilient Nigeria.
AIG Gumel emphasized the need for a whole-of-society approach to break the cycle linking dysfunctional families to insecurity. He called for collaboration among security agencies, families, schools, traditional rulers, and faith-based organizations to promote national security.
The police force will continue developing preventive policing strategies that strengthen families and support the government’s broader vision for a safer Nigeria.
By prioritizing family-centered approaches and collaboration, the Nigeria Police Force aims to create a safer, stronger Nigeria, where families, communities, and the nation can thrive.
