Tragedy has struck Jamaica’s pageant community as 26-year-old Tyra Spaulding, a former Miss Universe Jamaica finalist, was found dead in her home on Tuesday evening, September 23. Reports say she was discovered hanging from her bed frame with a pink curtain tied around her neck.
According to the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Corporate Communications Network, the incident occurred around 6:55 pm and is being investigated as a suspected suicide. Spaulding, who balanced careers as a model and an accountant, was also known for her advocacy on mental health and suicide prevention.
The Miss Universe Jamaica Organization expressed shock and sorrow over her passing, describing her as more than just a contestant. “Tyra was a vibrant, intelligent and inspiring young woman whose grace and spirit touched everyone she met,” the organization said in a statement, extending condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones.
Reigning Miss Universe Jamaica, Dr Gabrielle Henry, alongside National Directors Mark McDermoth and Karl Williams, also joined in paying tribute, noting that her life and legacy will continue to inspire. They prayed for her eternal rest and comfort for those grieving.
Her death has reignited conversations around mental health awareness in Jamaica, with many pointing to the need for greater support systems, especially for young people battling silent struggles.
