Abuja Journalists Mourn Arise TV Anchor, Demand Justice for Somtochukwu

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT chapter, has demanded a full forensic investigation into the tragic death of Arise Television news anchor, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu. She was reportedly killed during an armed robbery at her Katampe residence in Abuja on Monday, September 29, 2025.

In a statement, NUJ FCT Secretary, Comrade Jide Oyekunle, called on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to uncover the circumstances behind her death and ensure that those responsible face justice. He described the incident as a heartbreaking reminder of the nation’s worsening security situation.

The union described Somtochukwu as a “brilliant, passionate, and dedicated broadcaster” whose professionalism and composure won the admiration of both colleagues and viewers. Oyekunle noted that she embodied the courage, ethics, and commitment that define the new generation of Nigerian journalists.

The NUJ extended its condolences to her family, friends, and the management of Arise Television, urging Nigerians to see her passing as not just a personal loss but a blow to the entire media industry. They emphasized the importance of accountability and stronger security measures to prevent similar tragedies.

In her honour, the NUJ encouraged journalists nationwide to reflect on the values she stood for—integrity, excellence, and service to society. “Though her life was brief, her impact was profound. May her legacy continue to inspire courage and truth in journalism,” the statement read.

The Council further urged media professionals to remain united, vigilant, and supportive of one another as the industry collectively mourns a shining star gone too soon.
