The Oba of Benin, Omo N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Oba Ewuare II, has rejected the attempt by Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, Iyaloja-General of Nigeria and daughter of President Bola Tinubu, to install an Iyaloja in Benin markets. The move has sparked widespread debate and opposition from Benin indigenes and traditional leaders, _Standard Daily Press_ was briefed by angry Benin chiefs.
According to sources, Tinubu-Ojo announced the inauguration of Pastor Josephine Isi Ibhaguezejele as the Iyeki-General of Edo State, which has been met with strong resistance from the Oba of Benin and other stakeholders. The Oba maintains that the title “Iyaloja” is alien to Benin culture and that market leadership in Benin is traditionally held by Iyeki, selected by market women and confirmed by the palace.
The situation has taken a serious turn, with Acting Council Chairmen in Edo South being warned to suspend any planned coronation of an Iyaloja. Failure to comply may result in sanctions, including being declared “OGHIONBA” or “OGHIENVBO”.
The controversy has also drawn reaction from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which has emphasized that market leadership in Benin should follow native processes, with Iyeki selected by market women and confirmed by the palace, not imposed by outsiders.
As the situation continues to unfold, many are calling for respect for Benin’s cultural heritage and traditions. The Oba’s stance has been seen as a defense of the kingdom’s customs and institutions, and it remains to be seen how the matter will be resolved.
