Anambra Gets a Power Boost: First Power Granted Interim License to Light Up the State

The Anambra State government has taken a major step toward improving electricity supply by granting an interim license to First Power Electricity Company Limited to operate as a distributor in the state. The move comes under the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) license framework previously issued to EEDC, which oversees distribution in Anambra.

Speaking on Thursday, Prof. Frank Okafor, Chairman and CEO of the Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission (ASERC), emphasized that the transfer of power management is designed to ensure steady electricity across the state. He noted that under Governor Chukwuma Soludo, electricity is no longer considered a luxury but a cornerstone for development.

The temporary license will last for one year, during which ASERC will closely monitor First Power’s performance. Prof. Okafor assured the public of strict oversight to ensure that the company meets its distribution targets. “Today marks the start of a journey to adequately regulate the energy sector in Anambra State,” he said, praising the Anambra State House of Assembly for bringing the Anambra State Electricity Law (ANEL) to life.

Receiving the license, Dr. Ernest Mupwaya, representing the Group Managing Director of EEDC, expressed confidence in First Power’s ability to exceed expectations. He explained that the transition from operating under NERC to a state-issued license marks a milestone in creating a vibrant, competitive electricity market in Anambra.

Mupwaya highlighted the company’s commitment to supporting the state’s industrialization, urban growth, agricultural expansion, and SME development. “FirstPower is ready to operate fully under the state’s regulatory framework while upholding high standards of service delivery, safety, and operational excellence,” he added.

The interim licensing comes after Governor Soludo inaugurated five commissioners in October 2025 to oversee ASERC, marking the beginning of a new era in Anambra’s electricity sector. With First Power now officially licensed, residents and businesses in the state can look forward to a more reliable and regulated power supply in the coming months.
