2027 in View: Tinubu Sets Up High-Powered APC Committee to Heal Party Rifts

President Bola Tinubu has taken a decisive step towards strengthening internal unity within the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections, inaugurating a Committee on Strategy, Conflict Resolution and Mobilisation in Lagos on Wednesday.

The committee brings together key power brokers within the ruling party, including state governors, members of the Federal Executive Council and senior party stakeholders. It is chaired by Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, with former APC National Legal Adviser, Muiz Banire, serving as Member and Secretary.

Other members include Senator Adamu Aliero, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum and Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, Progressive Governors Forum Chairman and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, alongside Governors Hyacinth Alia (Benue), Umar Namadi (Jigawa), Bassey Otu (Cross River), Abiodun Oyebanji (Ekiti) and Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta). Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy Adegboyega Oyetola, Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle, and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello are also members.

Speaking at the inauguration, Governor Buni thanked President Tinubu and the party leadership for the confidence reposed in him and other members. He assured that the committee would approach its assignment with seriousness and dedication.

According to him, the team will engage in wide consultations and strategic engagements aimed at building an inclusive, durable and result-driven framework that addresses grievances within the party. He stressed that the goal is to ensure that all members, especially aggrieved stakeholders, feel a sense of belonging.

Buni also cautioned members against allowing personal interests or sentiments to overshadow the collective interest of the party, noting that proactive conflict management would be central to the committee’s work.

The committee’s inauguration follows President Tinubu’s earlier call for unity during the APC’s 15th National Executive Committee meeting held on December 19 in Abuja. At the meeting, the President reminded party leaders that the APC was founded on progressive ideals, inclusiveness and respect for differing opinions.

“We must be accommodating and tolerant,” Tinubu had said. “That’s the only way we can be resilient as a party and ensure that our democracy does not fail.”

With internal reconciliation now formally on the agenda, the move signals the APC’s intention to enter the 2027 race as a more cohesive and disciplined political force.
