ASUU, FG Reach Landmark Agreement Ending Years of University Disputes

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government have successfully concluded the long-awaited renegotiation of the 2009 FGN–ASUU Agreement, ending years of disputes over academic welfare and university funding.

ASUU disclosed the development on its official Facebook page on Wednesday, announcing that the new agreement would take effect from January 1, 2026, with a scheduled review after three years. The agreement was finalized on December 23, 2025, following extensive negotiations between both parties.

Under the new deal, academic staff in public universities will receive a 40 per cent salary increase, with professors eligible for pensions equivalent to their annual salary upon retirement at 70. The agreement also introduces a revamped university funding model, allocating resources for research, libraries, laboratories, equipment, and staff development.

Additionally, a National Research Council will be established to fund research activities, committing at least one per cent of Nigeria’s GDP. The agreement strengthens university autonomy and academic freedom, allows professors-only elections for academic leadership roles, and guarantees that no staff member will face victimisation for past industrial actions.
