The Nigeria Police Complaint Unit has reacted to a viral video showing a woman in distress, crying for help after allegedly being assaulted by police officers while travelling with her family to the Eastern part of the country.
According to a detailed account shared online by the owner of the vehicle involved, the incident reportedly occurred around 3 p.m. He alleged that the woman was illegally detained and assaulted by officers of the Nigeria Police Force and was forcefully taken from Aba to Umuahia against her will. He further claimed that her phone was seized, preventing her from contacting anyone for help, which he described as a clear abuse of power and a violation of her rights.
The man also alleged that during the journey, the police officer driving his vehicle acted recklessly, dangerously overtaking a police bus. This, he said, led to a serious accident as the car lost control, spun off the road, and crashed into nearby bushes. He added that the vehicle was badly damaged and the lives of the occupants were put at risk.
Calling the incident unacceptable, he urged the Abia State Government to immediately investigate the matter, hold the officers involved accountable, and take responsibility for the damage caused to his vehicle.
Reacting to the viral video, the Nigeria Police Complaint Unit, via its official X handle, condemned the alleged actions and assured the victim of attention. The unit described the experience as unacceptable and asked the affected persons to provide more details through direct messages, reaffirming its stance against impunity.
The Abia State Police Command also confirmed awareness of the incident. Its spokesperson, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said an investigation is currently ongoing and promised that the public would be updated once it is concluded. She urged the victims to reach out to the command, stressing that the Abia State Police does not condone or shield misconduct by any of its officers.
DSP Chinaka further appealed to the public to remain calm and avoid jumping to conclusions, assuring that professionalism and discipline remain core values of the command and that the outcome of the investigation would speak for itself.
