A High Court sitting in Orerokpe, Delta State, has ordered the suspension of the nationwide enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy recently announced by the Nigeria Police Force. The order temporarily restrains the police from implementing the directive issued by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, pending further legal proceedings.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the development, explaining that the court order followed a suit filed by a group of senior legal practitioners, including Kunle Edun (SAN), Ikechukwu Ogbonna, and others. The suit challenges the resumption of enforcement earlier scheduled to begin on January 2, 2026.
According to Hundeyin, although the police had announced the policy on December 15, 2025, in line with their responsibility to ensure public safety and internal security, the Force was subsequently served with an interim court order on December 17, 2025. The order restrains the police from proceeding with enforcement until the substantive case is heard and determined or the order is set aside.
He noted that, in compliance with the rule of law and respect for judicial authority, the Nigeria Police Force has entered an appearance in court, raised preliminary objections, and applied for the vacation of the interim order. The case has now been adjourned to January 20, 2026, for further hearing.
As a result, the police have officially placed the enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy on hold nationwide. The Inspector-General of Police reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to upholding the law while continuing to protect lives and property through lawful and intelligence-driven approaches.
The police assured members of the public that further updates and clear guidance would be provided after the court reaches a final decision, in the interest of public order and national security.
