New Year Message to Nigerians and Call to Resist Tinubu’s Anti-Poor Tax Policies
As Nigerians welcome the New Year, the Revolutionary Socialist Movement (RSM extends solidarity greetings to workers, youths, students, artisans, traders, and all oppressed people across the country.
The new year arrives amid deepening hardship. Inflation, rising food prices, unemployment, fuel hikes, and declining public services have made daily survival increasingly difficult for millions. Instead of addressing these realities, the Tinubu-led government has chosen to burden ordinary Nigerians with new and increased taxes, while protecting the wealth and privileges of the rich, big corporations, and political elites.
RSM strongly condemns the new tax laws and policies of the Tinubu administration, which are anti-poor, unjust, and designed to transfer the cost of economic crisis onto working people. Taxation under this system does not improve healthcare, education, housing, or jobs; it merely sustains corruption, debt servicing, and elite extravagance.
We maintain that Nigerians should not be forced to pay for a crisis they did not create. The solution to Nigeria’s problems does not lie in higher taxes on the poor, but in:
Recovering stolen public wealth
Ending wasteful governance and jumbo salaries
Taxing big businesses and the super-rich
Investing in public services and decent jobs
RSM calls on trade unions, civil society groups, students, and community organizations to unite in peaceful mass resistance against these exploitative policies. The new year must be one of organized struggle, solidarity, and collective action to defend living standards and democratic rights.
Another Nigeria is possible — one run in the interest of the majority, not a privileged few.
Happy New Year to the Nigerian people.
Forward to struggle. Forward to justice.
Signed:
Comrade Salako Kayode
