A fire incident on Monday caused panic and disruption around the Katangowa pipeline area in Abule Egba, Lagos State, after foams stored at the site suddenly caught fire.
Eyewitnesses said the outbreak sent thick plumes of smoke into the air, alarming residents and commuters in the area. The situation quickly led to temporary traffic congestion, as motorists avoided the route and daily activities were brought to a halt.
Before emergency responders arrived, residents and passersby made desperate efforts to control the blaze, using water, sand and other available materials. Although these efforts helped slow the spread of the fire, the flames were largely uncontrolled at that point.
Officials of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service later arrived at the scene and successfully put out the fire, preventing it from spreading to nearby buildings and critical facilities along the pipeline corridor.
No casualties were recorded, according to emergency officials. They added that the exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined and is currently under investigation.
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious around pipeline installations and storage areas, stressing the need for safety around hazardous locations.
