Oshiomhole Backs Tinubu’s Tax Policy, Says It Protects Low-Income Nigerians

Senator Adams Oshiomhole has praised President Bola Tinubu’s new tax reforms, describing them as aligned with progressive governance by shifting the tax burden from low-income earners to higher-income groups. Speaking on Channels Television, Oshiomhole said the policy protects working families while promoting fairness and sustainable revenue generation.

The former Edo State governor explained that governments rely on taxes from citizens’ earnings rather than “generating money independently.” He noted that the new regime exempts low- and middle-income earners while taxing higher earners more.

Addressing concerns over Value Added Tax (VAT), Oshiomhole clarified that it primarily targets non-essential and luxury goods, comparable to practices in countries like the US, UK, and UAE, urging Nigerians to support the policy.

According to Oshiomhole, salary earners under the Nigeria Labour Congress earning below N12 million annually would benefit from the progressive structure, ensuring that ordinary workers are shielded from excessive taxation.

President Tinubu had reaffirmed in December 2025 that the reforms, effective January 1, 2026, aim to harmonise the fiscal system, strengthen the social contract, and enhance public services, rather than arbitrarily raise taxes.
