Chaos erupted on Friday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway after two heavy-duty trailers—one carrying sand and the other granite—collided violently at Otedola Bridge inward Secretariat, leaving one driver dead.
According to Mr. Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to the Lagos Governor on Transportation, the crash was reportedly caused by a reckless contest for right of way. The driver of the sand-laden trailer was trapped and sustained fatal injuries, while the granite-laden truck driver escaped unhurt. LASTMA operatives quickly responded and transferred the victim to LASAMBUS personnel, who pronounced him dead at Ikeja General Hospital.
The incident was further complicated when a separate trailer carrying flour lost stability and overturned about 50 metres from the crash site, worsening traffic congestion. At the peak of the chaos, nearly 80% of the carriageway was blocked, prompting police and LASTMA to implement extensive traffic diversions.
Motorists traveling into Lagos from Mowe, Kara Bridge, and Redemption Camp were rerouted through the Ojodu–Olole corridor, connecting Agidingbi, Coca-Cola, Secretariat, and 7-Up to ease movement toward Gbagada or Ojota.
Giwa appealed to drivers to observe traffic rules and practice mutual courtesy on the roads, stressing that such vigilance is key to preventing needless loss of life.
