Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has officially resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing deepening internal conflicts and the need to protect the broader interests of Kano residents. His resignation takes effect from Sunday, January 25, 2026.
In a letter to the NNPP Chairman in Diso–Chiranchi Ward, Gwale LGA, and through his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, Governor Yusuf expressed gratitude to the party for the platform and support it provided him since 2022. He noted, however, that persistent leadership disputes and ongoing legal challenges have weakened party cohesion and created divisions among members.
“After careful reflection, and without prejudice to the party’s capacity to resolve its internal challenges, I have concluded that my resignation is in the best interest of the people of Kano State,” the governor stated. He emphasized that his decision was made in good faith, with no ill will, and remains committed to the peace and progress of the state.
The governor’s exit is significant, as he is leaving alongside 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen. The party’s Secretary in Diso–Chiranchi Ward, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, acknowledged the resignation, praising Yusuf for his achievements in infrastructure, health, education, and economic empowerment.
The mass resignation highlights the ongoing turmoil within the NNPP at both state and national levels, raising questions about the party’s future cohesion and political influence in Kano.
