APC Dismisses Rumours of Shettima’s Replacement Ahead of 2027 Elections

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has firmly rejected reports suggesting that Vice President Kashim Shettima may be replaced as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate in the build-up to the 2027 general elections. The party described the claims as speculative, untrue, and completely baseless.

The rumours gained attention amid conversations about whether the party might reconsider the Muslim–Muslim ticket that delivered victory in the 2023 presidential election. These speculations were further fueled by comments from the Minister of Culture and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, who warned against any move to alter the current ticket.

Musawa noted that political dynamics in northern Nigeria are deeply influenced by identity, history, and voter mobilisation. She explained that removing a Hausa, Fulani, or Kanuri Muslim from the ticket could create serious political challenges in core northern states such as Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Kebbi, Jigawa, Zamfara, and Sokoto, where politics is seen as a way of life.

She cautioned that those suggesting a reshuffle may not fully understand how politics works in the region, stressing that any change to the current structure could have unintended consequences.

Responding officially, the APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, said the party had observed a growing wave of media reports promoting the idea that Shettima could be substituted. He noted that the rumours had recently escalated to the point where specific names were being mentioned as possible replacements.

Morka warned media organisations against amplifying unverified claims, stating clearly that the reports were designed to create confusion and division. He emphasised that the party is not engaged in any succession or ticket discussions at this time, especially as political activities remain restricted under existing laws and electoral regulations.

The APC said its current focus is on governance and supporting President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima in delivering the Renewed Hope Agenda. The party also advised ministers, government officials, and party leaders to avoid statements that could fuel unnecessary political speculation and instead concentrate on their duties.
