Commuter allowance: The commuter allowance helps those who don’t need it

The federal government is still arguing about what to do about the high fuel prices. One proposal has cross-party support: The Commuter allowance should rise. But this measure would primarily support people who already earn a lot of money. Low-income earners and the middle class would receive significantly less relief. This is shown by calculations by Fraunhofer economist Sven Stöwhase for ZEIT. Accordingly, the relief costs the state around 1.5 billion euros a year. Half of this would go to the top quarter of the income distribution, which pays taxes on more than 60,000 euros.
