2027 Preparation Don Shift: INEC Postpones Voter Revalidation Exercise Nationwide

The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced the postponement of its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after the 2027 general elections, a move that signals a shift in its electoral preparations.

The decision was disclosed by Mohammed Haruna, the commission’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, following a meeting between INEC and Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) held on April 10, 2026.

According to Haruna, the exercise—originally designed to clean up and update the National Register of Voters—was carefully reviewed before the commission decided to delay its implementation. The revalidation process is meant to verify voter details, remove duplicate or ineligible entries, and improve the credibility of the voter database.

He explained that the exercise would also allow registered voters to confirm and correct their personal information where necessary, ensuring a more accurate and reliable electoral register. However, despite its importance, the commission has chosen to prioritise other preparations ahead of the 2027 elections.

INEC reassured Nigerians that the postponement does not affect its commitment to delivering free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections. The commission emphasized that maintaining the integrity of the electoral process remains a top priority.

While no new date has been announced, the decision is expected to spark conversations around voter data accuracy and election readiness, especially as political activities gradually begin to build toward the 2027 polls.
