Edo South 2027: Ize-Iyamu Joins Senatorial Race, Moves to Consolidate APC Support

The political atmosphere in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State heated up on Wednesday as former governorship candidate Osagie Ize-Iyamu formally declared his intention to contest for the Edo South Senatorial District seat under the platform of the All Progressives Congress.

The declaration was made during a strategic engagement with APC leaders and stakeholders in Orhionmwon, where party members gathered in what was widely described as both a consultative and mobilization meeting ahead of the 2027 political cycle.

Ize-Iyamu, addressing party faithful, said his decision to run for the Senate was driven by concerns over what he described as persistent underrepresentation of Edo South at the national level. He emphasised the need for stronger advocacy, equity, and more coordinated political inclusion for the district.

According to him, political fragmentation has weakened the ability of the region to secure meaningful federal attention. He therefore called for unity among party leaders across local government areas, stressing that collective political alignment would be key to achieving electoral success.

The event drew a wide range of APC stakeholders, including local government executives, ward leaders, women groups, councillors, and party elders. Prominent figures such as Comrade Julius Agbonzee, Pa Larry Enobakhare, Pa Abela Aisowieren, and Pa Mathew Ehigie were present, alongside former state lawmakers and other grassroots mobilisers.

Observers note that the visit is part of early groundwork aimed at consolidating internal party structures ahead of a likely competitive senatorial race in Edo South.

While no formal primary election date has been announced, the development signals the beginning of intensified political positioning within the APC as aspirants begin to test their support bases across the district.

For now, attention shifts to how party stakeholders will respond in the coming months as the race for Edo South gradually takes shape.
