“From Power to Politics” — Adebayo Adelabu Resigns to Pursue Oyo Governorship Bid

A new twist has emerged in Nigeria’s political landscape as Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, formally stepped down from his role — weeks after publicly denying any such move.

In a resignation letter dated April 22, 2026, and addressed to Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Adelabu confirmed he will leave office effective April 30 to focus on his long-anticipated governorship ambition in Oyo State.

“I write… to formally tender my resignation… to allow sufficient time for a smooth and orderly handover of responsibilities.”

For many observers, the timing is as striking as the decision itself.

Just weeks earlier, Adelabu and his media team had dismissed similar reports as false. During a televised interview, journalist Seun Okinbaloye quoted the minister as denying the authenticity of a circulating resignation letter.

“He said… ‘that is not true… I don’t sign documents with a blue pen,’” the broadcaster had revealed.

Now, with an official letter on record, questions are being asked:

Was the earlier denial strategic — or has the situation simply changed?

In his resignation, Adelabu expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, describing his appointment as a “rare honour” and pointing to his role in ongoing reforms within Nigeria’s power sector.

But his next move is clear.

“My decision… is informed by my intention to focus fully on my gubernatorial ambition,” he stated.

The development also connects to a broader directive from President Tinubu, requiring political appointees with 2027 ambitions to step down — a move aimed at separating governance from campaign activity.

For Adelabu, the transition marks a shift from managing one of Nigeria’s most challenging sectors to pursuing political leadership at the state level.

And as he exits the power ministry, attention now turns to what lies ahead:

A high-stakes political contest — and a question many will be watching close
