“Follow the Rules or Leave”: Akpabio Warns Oshiomhole During Heated Senate Session

Tension briefly took over the Senate chamber as Senate President Godswill Akpabio publicly cautioned Senator Adams Oshiomhole over repeated interruptions during plenary.

The moment unfolded while Akpabio was reading the Votes and Proceedings of the previous sitting. Oshiomhole, representing Edo North, repeatedly raised “Point of Order,” cutting into the session and drawing attention from colleagues.

What began as routine parliamentary proceedings quickly turned into a tense exchange.

Akpabio, visibly firm, reminded Oshiomhole that being a senator comes with responsibility and adherence to established rules.

“If you are a senator, you must go by the rules,” he said, striking the gavel and ruling him out of order.

But the interruptions didn’t stop immediately.

Oshiomhole continued speaking from his seat, insisting on being recognised, prompting concern among other lawmakers. At that point, Akpabio called on Orji Uzor Kalu to advise his colleague.

Kalu described the behaviour as inappropriate, urging Oshiomhole to respect Senate procedures. The Chief Whip, Mohammed Monguno, also stepped in, warning that continued disruption could attract disciplinary action.

Akpabio reinforced the warning, making it clear that persistent defiance could lead to Oshiomhole being removed from the chamber.

The incident, though eventually resolved after Oshiomhole backed down, has drawn attention to what observers describe as underlying tensions within the Senate.

For a moment, the chamber shifted from legislative business to a test of authority, discipline, and respect for parliamentary order—before calm was finally restored and proceedings continued.
