Truce Ends, Russia Resumes Drone Strikes on Ukraine as Fighting Intensifies

As the short-lived ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine expired on Tuesday, hostilities quickly resumed with fresh drone attacks targeting the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. Authorities confirmed that air raid sirens returned to the city for the first time since the truce began, signaling a renewed wave of aerial threats and escalating tension across the region.

According to Ukrainian officials, the attacks resulted in casualties in the eastern Dnipropetrovsk region, where one person was killed and at least four others injured. Local authorities reported that a man lost his life in Synelnykove, while multiple residents sustained injuries in nearby areas following continued bombardments.

On the Russian side, the military stated that its air defence systems intercepted and destroyed 27 Ukrainian drones over regions including Belgorod, Voronezh, and Rostov. The announcement reflects the ongoing exchange of aerial attacks between both sides, even after diplomatic efforts to temporarily halt the conflict.

The now-expired truce had been announced by Donald Trump ahead of Russia’s World War II victory celebrations, raising hopes for a possible pathway to peace. However, both nations had already accused each other of violating the ceasefire before it officially ended, casting doubt on its effectiveness.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky maintained that there was “no silence at the front,” emphasizing that fighting continued despite the agreement. He accused Vladimir Putin of lacking genuine commitment to ending the war, which began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Efforts to reach a lasting resolution have remained largely unsuccessful, with negotiations repeatedly stalling. Observers also note that global attention may be shifting toward other geopolitical tensions, potentially reducing urgency around peace talks in Eastern Europe.
