The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has organised a rally in Aba, Abia State, to mobilise transporters, traders, youths and civil servants to take part in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration exercise ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The event brought together different segments of society, with leaders using the platform to encourage eligible voters to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) as a key requirement for participating in future elections.
Speaking at the rally, the Abia State President of Ohanaeze, Chukwuemeka Okwuonu, urged all Igbo adults of voting age to register, describing voter participation as essential for strengthening the region’s political influence in Nigeria.
He emphasised that the Igbo population has the numerical strength to make a significant impact in the 2027 elections if fully mobilised, and warned families not to allow any eligible member to miss the registration process.
Okwuonu also said the organisation plans to begin recognising and rewarding political leaders from the region who perform well in office, while also using the ballot to hold underperforming officials accountable.
He expressed confidence that widespread participation in elections would significantly shape national outcomes and increase the political relevance of the South-East.
Also speaking at the event, the President of Ohanaeze in Aba South Local Government Area, Uche Wogu, reminded participants that elected leaders are accountable to the people and can be voted out if they fail to deliver on their promises.
He urged young people not to limit political engagement to online discussions, stressing that real political influence is achieved through voter registration and participation at polling units.
Wogu encouraged all residents, regardless of occupation, to register and actively take part in shaping the political future of the region.
