A faction of the African Democratic Congress led by its 2023 presidential candidate, Dumebi Kachikwu, has officially adopted him as its sole presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The announcement was made during the party’s National Convention held on Sunday in Abuja, where delegates ratified Kachikwu’s adoption amid ongoing leadership disputes within the party.
Chairman of the Electoral Committee and Benue State party chairman, Elias Adikwu, confirmed the decision before delegates at the convention.
The newly elected National Chairman of the faction, Abdulkadir Mohammed Bashir, later presented Kachikwu with the party’s flag as a symbol of his emergence as the faction’s presidential flag bearer for the 2027 election.
The convention also produced members of a new National Working Committee (NWC), including Kingsley Oggah as Board of Trustees Chairman, Johnny Tovie Derek as Deputy National Chairman, and Kennedy O. Odion as National Secretary.
Others elected include Joe Aroh, Chris Ugwu, and Patrick Ambut among other party officials.
The development comes months after another convention organised by a rival ADC faction led by former Senate President David Mark, where he emerged as the substantive National Chairman of the party following constitutional amendments ratified by delegates.
That convention reportedly attracted several opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, as part of broader coalition talks aimed at challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress in the 2027 elections.
The continued emergence of parallel leadership structures highlights the deepening internal divisions within the ADC as different factions battle for legitimacy ahead of the next general election cycle.
