Adesina Wins ‘African of the Decade’ Honour

DR Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), has been honoured with the inaugural African of the Decade award for his outstanding contributions to Africa’s growth and development. The accolade was presented during the Africa Investment Forum in Rabat, Morocco, a significant moment in the All-Africa Business Leaders Awards’ history.

The award, introduced by ABN Group in partnership with CNBC Africa, recognises individuals who have left an indelible mark on the continent. Adesina, who has served as AfDB President for nearly a decade, has been lauded for his ethical leadership and commitment to addressing Africa’s most pressing socio-economic challenges.

Unwavering leadership

Rakesh Wahi, ABN Group Chairman, praised Adesina’s transformative vision, citing his leadership in the Bank’s High5 strategic priorities. These initiatives focus on energy, agriculture, industrialisation, integration, and improving quality of life across Africa.

‘Dr Adesina has significantly impacted Africa through innovative projects and solutions that tackle socio-economic and environmental challenges,’ said Wahi. He also highlighted Adesina’s groundbreaking partnership with the World Bank, which aimed to provide electricity to 300 million Africans.

Adesina’s achievements extend beyond his tenure at AfDB. As Nigeria’s agriculture minister, he pioneered reforms, including a digital e-wallet system to curb corruption in fertiliser distribution, benefitting millions of smallholder farmers.

Global impact and recognition

Adesina has also been instrumental in mobilising global investment and reshaping perceptions of Africa as a land of opportunity. His work earned him the prestigious World Food Prize, underscoring his commitment to sustainable development.

Speaking at the ceremony, Adesina, accompanied by his wife, Grace Yemisi Adesina, expressed gratitude for the award. ‘This recognition is a testament to Africa’s resilience and potential,’ he said. ‘God did not make a mistake when He made me an African. I will dedicate my life to advancing this great continent.’

The African of the Decade award celebrates a legacy of transformative leadership, setting a high standard for those championing Africa’s growth. Adesina’s achievements stand as a beacon of hope for a continent on the rise.
