FORMER National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Adams Oshiomhole, has faulted the party for the unprecedented and widespread hunger, unemployment, and frustration that pushed young Nigerians onto the streets in protests that began on August 1 and continue to spread across the country.
Oshiomhole, who is famous for his caustic comments and finger-pointing, admitted that the party was responsible for the hardship following a succession of failed economic policies that led to a rise in the inflation rate, causing Nigerians to be unable to purchase essential items, including food.
It is a surprising admission from a politician known never to admit his role in failures, including those in which he played a lead role.
The confession came during an interview with Channels TV last weekend. The Senator representing Edo North said, “There is no doubt about the genuine hunger, the genuine and unacceptable level of unemployment, and the obviously genuine frustrations in the land.”
He continued that “the middle class is also agonizing,” blaming the events on policies executed by the APC-led FG under Muhammadu Buhari, which led to “a terrible economic situation in which the total national revenue was barely enough to service our debt burden.”
Although he told Nigerians not to expect a miracle within a year, many have wondered if the same APC responsible for the crisis can rescue the country from it.
