Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has doubled down on his claim that Peter Obi was the rightful winner of the 2023 presidential election. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Lawal revealed that while he backed Obi in 2023, his decision in 2027 will depend on new political realities.
According to him, “A day in politics is long. The parameters we used in 2023 will be different this time. Things have moved on, so we’ll see how it goes.”
Lawal also disclosed that northern politicians outside government have formed the Nigerian People’s Consultative Political Forum (North) to promote unity in the region and vote as a bloc. He said the group plans to consolidate under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a negotiating platform, ready to back any candidate—northerner, southerner, “or even from heaven”—who understands and commits to solving the North’s challenges.
On the possible 2027 contenders, he named Rotimi Amaechi, Peter Obi, and Atiku Abubakar, stressing that Nigeria’s next leader must rise above ethnic and partisan politics.
