Armed groups locally referred to as bandits have reportedly given residents of Ilali, a community in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State, a two-week ultimatum to raise and pay a levy of ₦10 million or face a violent attack.
According to sources, the demand was conveyed through an intermediary during a meeting with community leaders, where residents were told they must contribute the money if they wished to remain in their homes and cultivate their farmlands without harassment. Security agencies were said to have been informed of the situation, but villagers expressed doubt that any action would be taken.
The ultimatum has triggered panic, forcing many residents to flee Ilali and neighbouring villages. One community member lamented, “They gave us two weeks to pay. If we fail, they vowed to attack the whole village. We are helpless, and though security agencies are aware, nothing has been done.”
Another resident described the development as “deeply worrisome,” noting that those left behind are living in fear. Katsina State has endured years of repeated banditry, with farming and herding communities often targeted through violent raids, cattle theft, and abductions for ransom.
