Nigerian political commentator Barr. Valentine Obienyem has announced plans to formally petition any country where Mr. Reno Omokri is posted as Nigeria’s ambassador, urging the host government to reject his appointment. Obienyem, an adviser to 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, disclosed that he has prepared a detailed draft letter to the prospective host country, its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ministry of Internal Affairs, citing reasons Omokri is unfit for diplomatic service.
The letter highlights “grave concerns” regarding Omokri’s suitability, focusing particularly on his past public criticisms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, including mocking his health and questioning his integrity. Obienyem argued that Omokri’s outspoken conduct, shifting loyalties, and pursuit of personal advancement over national interest could pose risks to bilateral relations.
Obienyem stressed that his objection is based on documented public statements and behaviour, not personal animosity. He affirmed readiness to provide supporting links, videos, and social media posts demonstrating Omokri’s past positions, noting that the nominee had previously declared he would never work with Tinubu, a stance he believes contradicts the responsibilities of diplomatic representation.
