The Benue State House of Assembly has refused Governor Hyacinth Alia’s request to screen and confirm new commissioner nominees, accusing him of repeatedly disregarding the legislature.
During plenary on Friday, lawmakers said the governor had failed to address several key issues previously raised by the Assembly. Presided over by Speaker Hyacinth Dajoh, the House resolved not to entertain any further requests from the executive until their grievances are resolved.
The decision followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by Shimapever Jiji, who accused the governor of treating the Assembly and its resolutions with “total disregard.” Thomas Dugeri, who seconded the motion, echoed the sentiment, saying, “The governor has no respect for this hallowed chamber.”
Several members stressed that their stance was not meant to cripple governance but to protect the Assembly’s independence and compel the executive to honour prior agreements.
Among their demands are:
-
Immediate provision of official vehicles to affected members
-
Enforcement of suspension notices issued to the SUBEB chairman, the Otukpo Local Government chairman, and the executive secretary of the Benue State Sports Lottery and Marketing Board
Until these conditions are met, the Assembly says it will not honour or respond to any correspondence from the governor.
