Benue Police Assure Citizens Schools Are Secure Amid Rising Kidnapping Concerns

Following recent kidnapping incidents targeting schoolchildren in parts of the country, the Benue State Police Command has reassured residents that schools across the state remain safe.

State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Emenari Ifeanyi, told journalists on Friday that the Command had strengthened security in and around schools. In addition to the Schools Protection Squad (SPS), personnel have been posted to key institutions, particularly girls’ schools.

“The Inspector General of Police has directed that all schools and worship centres must be secured nationwide,” Ifeanyi said. “Even before that, we had assigned security officers to public schools in the state, with permanent personnel in some and routine patrols in others. Principals have been provided with police contacts to report any emergencies immediately.”

The Commissioner added that teachers and students are receiving training on emergency protocols, including how to contact the police in critical situations.

Looking ahead to the Christmas season, Ifeanyi explained that the Command has implemented proactive measures to ensure public safety. Management teams have been deployed to the hinterlands, while deputy and assistant commissioners oversee other commands. Tactical teams have been positioned in areas considered vulnerable to crime.

“We have instructed the public to report any suspicious activities to their local DPOs and Area Commanders,” he said. “We are working closely with sister security agencies, including the military, NSCDC, Civil Protection Guard, forest guards, Hunters Association, and local government chairmen to ensure a peaceful festive season for all residents.”
