Blood and Tears on Makurdi–Abuja Highway as Villagers Block Road Over Fresh Killings

Tension gripped Achakpa community in Agan, Makurdi LGA of Benue State, on Saturday as angry villagers stormed the busy Makurdi–Abuja highway to protest the brutal killing of their loved ones by suspected armed Fulani herdsmen.

The early morning attack of September 20, 2025, left three people dead, including Tor Felafa, his son Peter, and Mr. Francis Kulegwa, a respected choir master of Daudu Mission in the Catholic Diocese of Makurdi. The community was thrown into mourning as several others were abducted and many fled for their lives, with some still missing.

Eyewitnesses recounted how the victims were ambushed while working on their farms behind the village. The attackers, they claimed, had been monitoring farming activities before striking. This chilling strategy left residents terrified and deeply shaken.

The protest soon spread to the Garba–Atson–Abagena IDP camp axis of the highway, where villagers carried placards and tree branches, chanting solidarity songs and vowing not to leave until justice was served.

Stranded motorists, including a traveller identified as Melody Ede who was en route to Abuja, lamented the standstill as villagers insisted the governor must come down personally to address them.

The Benue State Police Command’s spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, confirmed the killings but declined to provide more details, leaving the community demanding urgent answers and protection.
