At least 16 people have been confirmed dead following a shooting at a Jewish festival celebration held at Australia’s Bondi Beach, police authorities announced early Monday. The incident has also left no fewer than 40 people injured, many of whom are currently receiving treatment in hospitals.
In an update shared on X, the New South Wales Police said the casualty figures were revised after further assessments. The police, however, did not clarify whether one of the deceased was among the suspected shooters, one of whom reportedly died during the attack.
The shooting, which occurred during what was meant to be a peaceful cultural celebration, has sent shockwaves across Australia and beyond. Security has since been heightened in the area as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Authorities are yet to release full details about the suspects or the motive behind the shooting, but they have assured the public that more information will be provided as inquiries progress.
