Brake Failure Tragedy in Ikoyi: LASTMA Arrests Truck Driver After Pedestrian’s Death on Osborne Road

Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) have arrested the driver of a Mercedes-Benz truck (KRD 466 XJ) after a tragic road accident along Osborne Road, Ikoyi, which claimed the life of a pedestrian.

According to reports, the incident occurred near the Traffic Light Junction on Simpson Street when the speeding truck suffered a sudden brake failure. In an attempt to avoid colliding with vehicles ahead, the driver lost control and hit a pedestrian walking by the roadside. The victim reportedly died instantly at the scene.

LASTMA officers arrived promptly, securing the area and restoring traffic flow. The driver was apprehended on the spot and later handed over to police operatives from Dolphin Estate and Ikoyi Divisions for investigation and prosecution. The victim’s remains were evacuated to a mortuary in Ebute Metta, pending identification by relatives.

In a statement, Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, quoted LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, describing the accident as “tragic and entirely preventable.” He extended condolences to the bereaved family and emphasised the need for regular vehicle inspections and maintenance, particularly for heavy-duty trucks.

Bakare-Oki lamented that mechanical negligence and poor maintenance culture remain major contributors to preventable road fatalities across Lagos. He urged motorists, especially fleet operators, to carry out comprehensive mechanical checks, with special attention to braking systems, before hitting the road.

He also commended the swift coordination between LASTMA and other security agencies, reaffirming the Authority’s commitment to road safety enforcement and continuous public enlightenment campaigns for commercial drivers and transport unions.

The Authority reiterated its condolences to the victim’s family, reminding all road users that safety on Lagos roads is a collective responsibility requiring caution, discipline, and vigilance.
