At least two police officers were killed on Thursday night after gunmen attacked a patrol vehicle in Enugu State.
The incident occurred around 9:30pm at the Depot Police Detective College junction in Enugu, the state capital, according to information obtained by SaharaReporters.
During the attack, the assailants reportedly opened fire on the patrol vehicle operated by officers of the Distress Response Squad (DRS) of the Enugu State Police Command. The officers were fatally shot, and their service weapons—two AK-47 rifles loaded with live ammunition—were carted away by the attackers.
A police source told SaharaReporters that the patrol vehicle was completely burnt during the attack. The source added that one Police Inspector and one Sergeant were killed in the incident.
“The DRS patrol vehicle was attacked and burnt to ashes. One Inspector and one Sergeant were killed, and their rifles with ammunition were taken away by unknown gunmen,” the source said.
Security conditions have continued to worsen in the South-East region, with Enugu State recording several violent attacks in recent times. Security operatives, government officials and public facilities have increasingly become targets of armed groups operating in the region.
The Nigerian government has repeatedly accused the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) of being responsible for the attacks across the South-East. However, the group has consistently denied any involvement.
