CBN Pays ₦3.31bn to Depositors of Failed Banks in H1 2025

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) says it paid ₦3.31 billion to 6,422 insured depositors of 651 financial institutions in liquidation in the first half of 2025. The disclosure was made in its latest Financial Stability Report.

According to the CBN, the affected institutions include 50 commercial banks, 546 microfinance banks, and 55 primary mortgage banks. Of the total payout, ₦2.94 billion went to 6,127 depositors of closed commercial banks, while ₦30 million was paid to 285 depositors of microfinance banks.

Cumulatively, insured depositors of commercial and microfinance banks have received over ₦66 billion, while depositors of closed primary mortgage banks have received ₦368 million so far. The apex bank also noted that ₦3.32 billion was paid to uninsured depositors during the period.

The CBN explained that uninsured deposits are amounts exceeding the maximum insurance cover. It added that the liquidation process focuses on settling guaranteed claims, recovering debts, selling assets, and paying dividends—giving priority to depositors whose balances exceed the insured limits.
