Chaos in Lagos as police use tear gas on Makoko, Oworoonsoki protesters

Pandemonium broke out on Wednesday in Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, when operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of peaceful protesters. The demonstrators were protesting demolitions in Makoko and Iyana-Oworoonsoki areas.

The incident occurred outside the Lagos State House of Assembly Complex, forcing workers, passers-by, and protesters to flee for safety. Demonstrators carried banners demanding government intervention to save their homes and communities.

Eyewitnesses reported injuries among some protesters, although no official casualty figures have been released. RRS officers, stationed at key points, blocked access to the Assembly at around 1:30 p.m., prompting panic and disorder among the crowd.

The situation remains tense, with videos from the scene showing people running from the teargas deployed by police.
