Activist Scott Iguma has been granted bail in the sum of ₦10 million by the Federal High Court in Lagos, where he is standing trial on charges of disseminating false information and issuing threats to life.
Presiding over the bail hearing on Monday, Justice Friday Oghazi approved the bail following an application by Iguma’s legal counsel, Stanley Alieke, who urged the court to consider lenient conditions. The motion, dated July 17, 2025, was supported by a sworn affidavit outlining the grounds for the request.
Although the prosecution, represented by A. Nwabuisi, did not oppose the bail request, they urged the court to prohibit the defendant from posting information about the nominal complainant on social media or making any public commentary regarding the case. In response, the defence asked that the same restriction be imposed on the complainant.
Justice Oghazi agreed with both sides and ordered a media gag on both the defendant and the complainant, emphasizing that the matter is now sub judice and must not be litigated in the public space. He instructed all legal representatives to communicate this directive to their respective clients.
As part of the bail conditions, the court mandated that the surety must:
-
Present valid documentation of property ownership within the court’s jurisdiction, or
-
Be a civil servant of the Federal Government or Lagos State Government, not below Grade Level 12, with proof of tax compliance.
The case was adjourned to October 10, 2025, for the commencement of trial.
Iguma was originally arraigned on July 17, facing a four-count charge under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act (as amended) 2024. The charges relate to the alleged distribution of a false video and issuing threats to life, reportedly in violation of Section 24(1)(b) and punishable under Section 24(2)(ii) of the Act.
The bail ruling marks a significant development in the high-profile case, which has attracted public interest due to the sensitive nature of the allegations and Iguma’s activist profile.
