A student of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic (RUGIPO), Owo, identified simply as Peter, has been reportedly killed by suspected cultists in the Opomulero area of Owo, Ondo State, in an incident that has left the community in shock and grief.
The attack is said to have happened on Sunday, December 14, 2025, when armed assailants stormed the area in search of alleged rival cult members. According to residents, the group eventually traced Peter to his residence.
A community source told Punch that the attackers allegedly pretended to be visitors, called Peter out of his apartment and shot him. He reportedly struggled to survive and was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.
Another resident disclosed that the tragedy was even more heartbreaking as Peter, popularly known as Don P, was still mourning the loss of his mother, who passed away just three weeks earlier.
“He hadn’t even recovered from his mum’s death before this happened. It’s painful,” the source said.
An anti-cultism advocacy group, Naija Confra, linked the killing to an ongoing clash between rival cult groups. According to the platform, the violence allegedly started days earlier during a birthday celebration by members of the Eiye confraternity within the school environment.
The group claimed that tensions escalated after an Eiye leader allegedly ordered the assault of a female student, an action that led to a confrontation with members of the Buccaneers confraternity who were present. What began as a clash reportedly spiralled into retaliatory attacks between the two groups.
Naija Confra alleged that the latest reprisal resulted in Peter being targeted and killed, even though details surrounding his direct involvement remain unclear.
The killing has reignited concerns over cult-related violence around tertiary institutions, with residents and students calling for urgent security intervention to prevent further loss of innocent lives.
