DCP Abba Kyari Earns MSc in Peace Studies While in Kuje Custody

ABUJA – Former Head of the Inspector-General of Police’s Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abba Kyari, has successfully earned a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution while in detention at the Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja.

Kyari was formally awarded the degree on Monday, according to a copy of the certificate shared with The Whistler by a family member, Abdul Hadi Ibrahim. The certificate confirms that he completed the postgraduate programme at the Nigerian Open University (NOUN) Kuje Correctional Centre Campus, which offers a special study arrangement enabling inmates to pursue education as part of their rehabilitation.

Prior to joining the Nigeria Police Force, Kyari obtained a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Geography and rose through the ranks to lead a specialised intelligence unit responsible for dismantling kidnapping and terrorist networks across Nigeria. Despite being in detention, he remained committed to academic and personal growth, successfully completing the master’s programme and expressing his intention to immediately pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree.

In a statement issued on Kyari’s behalf, Ibrahim described the accomplishment as a powerful demonstration of resilience, discipline, and determination in the face of adversity. He thanked God for guidance and commended the NOUN Vice-Chancellor and management for supporting education without barriers. Ibrahim also acknowledged the Nigerian Correctional Service, Kuje management, and staff for fostering an enabling environment for learning, rehabilitation, and personal development.

“This milestone reinforces the truth that leadership, excellence, and the pursuit of knowledge transcend circumstances,” the statement concluded, highlighting Kyari’s unwavering commitment to self-improvement even under challenging conditions.
